BMW developed the sixth generation 5 series alongside the impressive new 7 series with BMW claiming the flagship car's influence not only brings efficiency related savings to manufacturing and design but also makes the new 5 series a more efficient car overall. It's known internally as the F10 replacing the E60, the new 5 series shares its platform with the 7 series.

Somewhat closely related to the Rolls Royce Ghost, the new sedan is larger in every dimension with the wheelbase stretching to within 10cm of the 7 series and is a close 7cm longer than its direct competitor Mercedes-Benz W212 E-Class.

The new chassis has double-wishbone front suspension with cast aluminium control arms, as well with BMW's integral-V multi-link rear suspension. With rear-wheel steering, the F10 also boasts active roll control, active damping and brake energy regeneration. Exterior design is well impressive with remarkably close to the lines of the new 3 Series, good evidence in the power lines on the bonnet as well as the hard edge to the shoulder line in the side body. Front wears a larger kidney grille with a more powerful looking headlamp articulation.

Interiors

Sense of purpose is made more obvious with the fact of the front layout being canted towards the driver. The cabin is a well-purposed evolution of the E60's design and features what BMW is billing as fourth-generation iDrive. All models are going to get a 7-inch LCD screen and a 10-inch screen for cars that have navigation. This 5 series also has an electromechanical parking brake. BMW's ConnectedDrive suite of drive assist gizmos includes parking assistance, collision warning with brake application in the active cruise control and a new speed limit warning system.
Interiors for BMW have always been top-notch, no doubt about that and this also shows up in the BMW X1 2013 with many enhancements in there from its previous versions.
BMW have also listed Stop & Go as a standard fitment in all the cars. Night vision and head-up display are too on the list with finally BMW getting a lane departure warning system.

Powertrains

Turbocharged V8 is the top engine with other petrol engines including a turbocharged petrol 6-cylinder. In diesel options, there are two turbocharged 6-cylinder engine and a 4-cylinder turbo with common rail direct injection. 550i takes well approved 411ps twin-turbo direct injection V8 and expects to deliver 0-100kmph in just 5 seconds. 535i comes with 309ps turbo-six, a new inline six while output and displacement being same.
In terms of performance, BMW never laid behind other brands in its segments. Check out BMW Z4 sDrive35i competing Audi TT 3.2FSI with their performance statistics and find out who won it.

The car has automatic start/stop standard fitting, which makes it hit 20kmpl in the Europian test. All variants of this 6th generation 5 Series are available with an optional 8-speed auto transmission except for 550i having it normally as a feature. In improving powertrain efficiency, F10 eliminates E60's active steering with new electric power steering assist.

This new 6th gen 5 series would give a tough competition to its rivals E-Class, Audi A6, flashy Jaguar XF, and Volvo S80 with surely BMW being most muscular of all.
